Abelen, Chris (Christiaan Mathias Maria Abelen)

Abelen, Chris [Christiaan Mathias Maria Abelen], trombone; b. Tilburg, the Netherlands, 29 September 1959. Ad Abelen (1932) is his father and Mimi Rijs, (1933) is his mother. He has two brothers, Paul (1962) and Ton (1967). No musicians in his family.Started playing trumpet at the age of 7, than again at 11 and switched to trombone at the age of 18 and also formed a big-band. He started arranging for this band and also conducting. He studied, first classical trombone in Tilburg, than to Amsterdam for impro trombone by Willem van Manen.

He has played with Willem Breuker Kollektief (1984-1987), Dick de Graaf Septet (1988), J.C.Tans Orchestra (1988-1989), * Contraband (1989 -2000), Eric van der Westen Octet (1991-1992), and Paradise Regained Orchestra (1995). He has led the Chris Abelen Sextet.
