Elphick, Steve (Steven James)

Elphick, Steve (Steven James), double bass, trumpet, tuba; b. Sydney, Australia, 22 October 1955.

Active on the Sydney jazz scene since the late 70s choosing to play mainly with composer-led groups in various combinations under the direction of musicians such as Phil Treloar, Sandy Evans, Roger Frampton, Mark Simmonds, Bruce Cale and Peter Dasent.  Currently performs, records and tours in Australia and overseas with The Umbrellas, Michele Morgan, Andrew Robson, The Engine Room and folk group Mara! and a group led by trombonist lames Greening.  Won Australian Jazz Critics' Award for bass in 1992.

Also works in John Pochee's band Ten Part Invention since its founding in 1986.
