Faria, Nelson (Jairo Sanches)
Faria, Nelson (Jairo Sanches), guitarist, composer and educator; b. Belo Horizonte, MG - Brazil, 23 March 1963. His father, Nelson Jairo Ferreira Faria, was born in 1927 in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. His mother, Nathalia Sanches Faria, was born in 1930 in Itajuba, MG, Brazil. His wife, Andrea Rita Pontes Faria was born in 1966. They have three children, two sons, Nelson Jairo Pontes Faria (b. 1987) and Joćo Felipe Pontes Faria (b. 1988) and a daughter. Juliana Pontes Faria (b. 1992). He has studied with Gamela, private, in Brasilia, Brazil from 1980-1983, Joe Diorio in Los Angeles, 1983, Ted Greene in Los Angeles 1983, Manny Albam in New York in 2001 and Jim McNeely in New York in 2001.
Faria was born in Belo Horizonte,MG,and grew up in Brasilia,DF,where he began his guitar lessons. In 1983,he moved to Los Angeles to attend G.I.T (Guitar Institute of Technology), where he studied with Joe Diorio, Joe Pass, Ron Eschete, Howard Roberts, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, and many others. While in L.A. he also took private lessons with the chord melody master Ted Greene.
After his return to Brazil in 1984, Nelson Faria became one of the most important names on call lists for workshops, clinics, seminars, recording sessions and concerts. His name appears on over 60 CDs and he has performed in South America, US,Europe and Israel. He has performed and/or recorded with artists including Jo"o Bosco, Ivan Lins, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Lisa Ono, Milton Nascimento, Edoe Lobo, Cassia Eller, Jerzy Milewski, Baby do Brasil, ZZlia Duncan, Paulo Moura, Toninho Horta, Antonio Adolfo, Carlos Malta, Nivaldo Ornelas, Ana Caram, Tim Maia, Mauricio Einhorn, Leila Pinheiro, Wagner Tiso, and Carlos Lyra.
In 2001 he was awarded the "Bolsa Virtuose" scholarship under the auspices of MinistZrio da Cultura of Brazil and joined the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop (NY). As part of that program he studied privately with master arranger Manny Albam, and in group with Albam, Jim McNeely and Michael Abene.
As an educator, Nelson has taught for 12 years at the Est'cio de S' University (Rio de Janeiro, Brasil), and has taught clinics on Brazilian guitar at the IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators, New York),University of South California (Los Angeles), San Francisco State University (San Francisco), Guitar Institute of Technology (Los Angeles), GSteborgs Universitet (Goteborg -Sweden), Manhattan School of Music (New York-), Berklee College of Music (Boston), Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (Brasil), Associacao Brasileira de Educacao Musical (Rio de Janeiro,Brasil),Curso Internacional de Vercao de Bras'lia (Brasil),and Oficina de MPB de Curitiba (Brasil).
Nelson Faria has five CD titles under his name: Ioi (Perfil Musical,1993), Beatles, a Brazilian Tribute with pianist JosZ Namen (Solo Music,1998), Janelas Abertas with singer Carol Saboya (Lumiar Discos,1999), Tres/Three with bassist Nico Assumpcao and drummer Lincoln Cheib (independent, 2000), and "Nelson Faria" (independent 2002).
He has written four educational books: A arte da improvisacao (Lumiar Ed. 1991),The Brazilian Guitar Book (Sher Music Co.1995), Escalas,arpejos e acordes para violo e guitarra (Lumiar Ed.1999) and "Inside the Brazilian rhythm section" with pianist Cliff Korman (Sher musc 2002) . Nelson Faria also produced the instructional video "Toques de Mestre" (3Touch of a Master 2 --Giannini SA,1990) and appears on the instructional video Secrets of Brazilian Music and book Brazilian Music Workshop by Antonio Adolfo.
