Jacobs, Sid (Dino)

Jacobs, Sid (Dino), guitar; b. Miami Beach, FL, 7 August 1954. He grew up in Cuba until revolution in 1959 returned to Miami until age 18. His mother is Helen Jacobs, b. September 23, 1919 Camden, New Jersey; and his father is Sid Jacobs Sr., b. February 14, 1914, New York City, New York.

He took guitar lessons from a retired radio musician, guitarist Willis Connolly in Florida from age 7 until 12.  Attended Miami-Dade Junior College almost a year in 1972. There studied with guitarist/composer Vincent Bredice . After that went on the road. He learned on the bandstand and studied on his own.  A close friendship with guitarist Joe Diorio from the age of 17 also provided him with a healthy musical environment, though there were no formal lessons. It was in Miami, at the age of seven, he began his fascination with the guitar. When his family moved to Nevada, Sid obtained a position as guitar instructor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This made him, at eighteen, the youngest faculty member in the school's music department. After moving to Los Angeles he developed the curriculum for the Advanced Bebop and Jazz Guitar course at the Dick Grove School and the Jazz Guitar class at the Musicians Institute (MI and GIT), where he continues to teach. In 1998 Sid was the first North American jazz guitarist invited to perform in Argentina's "Guitars of the World" festival. In May of 2001 he was invited to perform at the Ankara Music Festival in Turkey. Some of the jazz artists with whom he has performed include Harold Land, Eddie Harris, Buddy Montgomery, Joe Diorio, Brad Mehldau, Larry Goldings and Javon Jackson. Along with writing and teaching, Sid continues to tour, performing and conducting jazz guitar workshops.

His wife is Edith Conried-Jacobs, b. Feb 6, 1957. His daughter India was born April 4, 1992.
