Javors, Keith (Richard Buckles)
Javors, Keith [Richard Buckles], pianist,composer,educator; b. Carbondale, IL, 15 October 1971. His mother is Paulette Loyd Johnson and father is Gary Dean Buckles, and he has one elder brother, Gary Kent Buckles.
Keith worked for several years as an in-demand jazz pianist and composer in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex, performing and recording as a member of groups such as the One O'Clock Lab Band, the Dallas Jazz Orchestra, and the Brad Turner Quartet. He began fronting his own groups during this time, something which continued when he relocated to Illinois in 1996 and to Florida in 2000, where he currently resides. Javors attended college and taught as a Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas (B.M., M.M. in Jazz Piano Performance) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Ed.D. in Music Education). His doctoral dissertation, "An Appraisal of Collegiate Jazz Performance Programs in the Teaching of Jazz Music," is a landmark in the field. He then taught for a semester at Eastern Illinois University as a visiting faculty member before accepting his current position at the University of North Florida, wh ere he directs the award-winning UNF Jazz Ensemble I and teaches jazz piano and improvisation. Since 1998, Javors has developed a substantial reputation as a player and teacher, having recorded three well-received CDs of original music as a leader: Mantra (1998), From Here To The Street (2000), and The High Road (2003). His groups have performed by invite at such venues as the Jazz Showcase, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Vienne Jazz Festival, the International Association for Jazz Education Annual Conference, the Midwest Clinic: An International Band and Orchestra Conference, Joe Segal's Jazz Party At Sea, and the Rockefeller Center, and have been frequently noted in major jazz periodicals for excellence. Javors has performed with Bunky Green, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Lovano, Conrad Herwig, Dave Holland, and more.
