Kobayashi, Ron, piano; b. Los Angeles, CA, 8 February 1962. He's been playing jazz piano in Southern California for the last 16 years. He was privately trained in classical music for 8 years and for the most part became self taught in jazz (did take a few lessons from Dick Powell in Orange County and Paul Smith in Los Angeles).
He has two CDs out on Carpet Cat Records under the name "Ron Kobayashi Trio." The first CD, released in 1995, received regular airplay on several jazz stations including KLON in Los Angeles, and KSBR in Orange County. It was voted one of the "top 95 albums of 1995" on KSBR radio. The second was released in 1998. He recorded a solo piano album for Casierra Records in 1997.
My trio has been featured on the internationally distributed "Johnny Yune" television show. We have played numerous jazz festivals including the Orange County Art and Jazz Festival, the San Bernardino Music Festival and the Dana Point Jazz Festival. In 1996 the Ron Kobayashi Trio was voted most popular jazz group in Orange County by readers of the Orange County Weekly Magazine.
As a pianist he has worked with Mel Torme (concert at Plummer Auditorium, Fullerton, CA 1985); Bill Watrous (Steamers jazz club, Fullerton, CA 1997); Pete Christlieb (Orange County Jazz Festival 1997 and Steamers Jazz club 1997); Phil Upchurch (Tutto Mare Jazz Club, Newport Beach, CA 1992); The Modernaires with Paula Kelly Jr. (Outdoor music concert, Irvine, CA 1994); Steve Hoffsteter (Steamers Jazz Club, Fullerton, CA 1996); and Eric Marienthal(Tutto Mare Jazz Club, Newport Beach, CA, several times throughout 1993 and 1994).
