Lyon, Cynthia (Margaret)

Lyon, Cynthia (Margaret), pianist, vocalist; b. Boston 26 October 1949. Grew up in the New Haven, CT, area.

As a child she studied classical piano and would listen to a vocal trio consisting of her mother and two aunts doing USO World War Two radio broadcasts. In 1975 she founded the swing band Eight to the Bar, which she still leads. From its beginning the band has been engaged full-time, working from 200 to 250 dates a year, and having toured the East and West coasts and Europe. It has released eight albums.

In 2001 Lyon married Eight to the Bar's saxophone player, Collin Tilton, who was the saxophone and flute player on Van Morrison's album Moondance. Before joining Lyon's band, Tilton had played with Etta James, James Cotton, Clarence Clemmons, Johnny Tilotson, Carla Bley, and others.
