Margitza, Rick (Richard Dean)

Margitza, Rick (Richard Dean), tenor sax; b. Detroit, MI, 24 October 1961.

He studied violin at age four ,piano at eight and saxophone at 12 after hearing a Charlie Parker record. Maternal grandfather played cello with Charlie Parker's string group. Paternal grandfather was a Romanian gypsy violinist. His father was a violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Rick attended Wayne State University 1980, Berklee School Of Music 1981, University Of Miami 1982-83, and Loyola University New Orleans (Bachelor of Music) n 1984. He's had private studies with Donald Sinta, Gerry Niewood, Michael Brecker, David Liebman and Sonny Stitt. Margitza toured with Maynard Ferguson and also Flora Purim and Airto before moving to New York in 1988. He spent part of 1988 and 89 in Miles Davis' group. He was playing throughout the 1990s with  John Fedchock's New York Big Band, and Maria Schneider's jazz orchestra. Currently living in New York, Greenwich Village. He's performed and/or recorded with McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson, Flora Purim and Airto, Tony Williams, Eddie Gomez, Chick Corea, Maria Scneider, and Miles Davis.
