Marucci, Mat (Mathew Roger Marucci III)

Marucci, Mat [Mathew Roger Marucci III], drums; b. Rome, NY, 2 July 1945. He was born to a family with musical histories on both sides. His father, Mathew Roger Jr, was a former professional trumpet player. His mother is Helen Salerno Marucci. Two uncles, Luigi Marucci and Johnny Salerno, were both professional musicians. His sister, Mena Marucci Colella, was a former concert pianist, a first place winner in piano competition in Texas and silver medal winner in international piano competition in Geneva, Switzerland and a graduate of Eastman School Of Music 1962. His brother, Ed Marucci, is a former professional trumpeter.

Graduated  high school from St. Aloysius Academy - 1963. He studied drums with Dick Howard, Auburn, N.Y. 1964-1965.At Auburn Community College, he got an AAS Degree [Associate in Applied Science] in Business Mgmt. -1965. He relocated to the West Coast in 1969. Sacramento City College,  AA Degree [Associate of Arts] in Music, 1973.Lived between New York City, Los Angeles and Sacramento since that time. Marucci has played with Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrell, Eddie Harris, James Moody, Buddy De Franco, Les McCann, Joey Calderazzo, Don Menza, John Tchicai, Bobby Shew, Ernie Andrews, Herb Jeffries, Ron Eschete, Vinny Golia, Pharaoh Sanders, Earl Palmer, Jake Hanna, Freddie Hubbard, Bob Sheppard, John Patitucci, David Benoit, Eugene Wright, Frank Collett, Monty Budwig, John Fedchock, Ross Tompkins, John Heard, Frank de la Rosa, Plas Johnson, Al Viola, Joel DiBartolo, Arlette McCoy, Conte Candoli, Joe Roccisano, Dave Pike, Bruce Forman, Lou Levy, Frank Morgan, Ray Pizzi, Willie Bobo, Warne Marsh, Vince Lateano, Herbie Lewis, Lisle Ellis, Brian Bromberg, Dan Papaila, Billy Rogers, Pete Barbutti, Eddie Fisher, Rosemary Clooney, Julius LaRosa, Ink Spots, Tommy Tedesco, Frank Strazzeri, Don Shelton, and others. He was an Adjunct Professor in the Los Rios Community College District. He's been an Applied Music Instructor at American River College, Sacramento, CA and an Applied Drumset Instructor at Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. Mat is the author of several books on drumming and is an endorser for Mapex drums, Zildjian cymbals, Pro-Mark drumsticks and Remo drumheads. He has written numerous articles on drumming for Modern Drummer magazine, the Percussive Arts Society's Percussive Notes and Percussion News, Pro-Mark's Upstrokes, and the online drum magazine Cyber-Drum [www.cyberdrum.com].

He married Diane Bastone Marucci in 1982. They have a son, Matthew Roger IV, b. 1986, a semi-professional drummer and amateur pianist, and a daughter, Therese Renee Marucci, b. 1989, an amateur pianist, flutist.
