McCandless, Paul

McCandless, Paul, oboe, wood flutes, bass clarinet, English horn; b. Indiana, PA, 24 March 1947.

He is a sensational oboist who brings a fluency to the instrument normally associated with the saxophone. Paul studied at Duquesne University and the Manhattan School of Music, having moved to NY in 1967. He performed with Pittsburgh Symphony under William Steinberg, and toured and recorded with the Paul Winter Consort (1968-73), and most notably Oregon (1970-present). He's also worked with Elvin Jones, Steve Gadd, and Dave Friesen. He has also appeared on albums by Pat Metheny, Mark Isham,Carla Bley, Jaco Pastorius, Eberhard Weber, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis. He was a finalist in the 1971 English-horn auditions for the N.Y. Philharmonic.
