Oxman, Keith (Jay)
Oxman, Keith (Jay), tenor saxophone; b. Denver, CO, 14 August 1958. He has played in Denver since the mid 70s. Except for 1992 to 2000 lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado), he has lived in Denver all of his life. His parents are Louis (b. Denver, CO, January 10, 1922) and Fannie-Rose Oxman (b. Oklahoma City, OK, February 13, 1932). Neither parent is a musician. They are both still alive. He has one sister named Juli Ann Oxman at birth. Now married as Juli Ann Harnett. She was born in Denver Colorado on August 29, 1960.
Oxman studied privately with Nick Romeo from about 1967 to 1970. Studied with Willie Hill, Jr. during most of the 1970's. He attended Carson Elementary in Denver from early 60s to 1970. He attended Hill Jr. High School in Denver from 1970 to 1973. Hettended George Washington High School in Denver, Colorado from 1973- 1976. He attended the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver from 1976- 1984. He earned a BME (Bachelors of Music Education) and an MA with emphasis on Clarinet Performance. He also studied privately (only from 1977-1984) with Ramon Kireilis during most of his years at the Lamont School of Music. He also studied jazz on a private basis with Gene Rush for a short time during the late 1970's while at the Lamont School of Music.
His wife is Susan Kay Oxman, born in Denver, Colorado on April 7, 1964. She plays flute and bassoon. She studied at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT from 1984-88 and earned a BM. She studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, NY from 1989-91 and earned an MM. She played Bassoon in the Rishon LeZion Symphony Orchestra in Israel from 1991-92. Their son is Nathan Henry Oxman, born in Denver, Colorado on November 29, 2000. Their daughter is Anna Kate Oxman, born in Denver, Colorado on January 25, 2003.
He taught in School District #3 in Widefield Colorado from 1993 to 2000. He has also taught in Denver, Colorado at East High School from fall of 2000 to the present. Both teaching positions were for Instrumental Music. Some of the musicians that he has had a chance to appear with are: Buddy Rich, Jack McDuff, Tom Harrell, Valery Ponomarev, Mel Torme, Joe Bonner, Billy Wallace, Pete Christlieb, Red Holloway, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey, The Temptations, and The Fifth Dimension. He had been playing for the past two years at El Chapultepec with Eugene Bass (a drummer originally from Chicago) at the El Chapultepec in Denver.
