Pochee, John (Kenneth)
Began in 1956 at the Mocambo and El Rocco Jazz Cellar. Active 60's with groups in Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide. Formed The Last Straw in 1974 and played with the Judy Bailey Quartet from 1974 to 1979. Since the early 80's, played mainly in Bernie McGann's trios and quartets.
He formed his own band Ten Part Invention in 1986. John Poche'e wanted a band that had the rhythmic flexibility of a small group but could provide a wide range of colours through imaginative, innovative writing and improvising. This desire was inspired by his love of the Thelonious Monk ten-piece recordings. In 1986, the opportunity came about to put together this concept for performances at the Adelaide Festival of the Arts. "I assembled this unique combination of creative musicians from four different generations with whom I had gradually become associated over the years.
As Ten Part Invention, we made a debut at the Festival and then returned to Sydney where we performed to critical acclaim." Since then, although all members are either leaders or key personnel in other major groups, Ten Part Invention has stayed together, building up a large library of compositions by composers within the band, as well as original works by other Australians. The other members of the band are Roger Frampton (piano/alto/sopranino), Steve Elphick (double bass), Miroslav Bukovsky (trumpet/flugelhorn), Warwick Alder (trumpet/flugelhorn), James Greening (trombone/didgeridoo), Bernie McGann (alto), Ken James (tenor/soprano/flute), Sandy Evans (tenor/soprano/flute), and Bob Bertles (alto/baritone/clarinet).
Pochee toured Russia with The Engine Room in 1989 and with The Last Straw toured New Zealand in 1988, Canada in 1989 and won an ARIA award and toured Russia in 1990. With McGann Trio, performed Ronnie Scott's London and concerts in Poland, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, India and Malaysia in 1988, Russia in 1990, Canada in 1993 and 1996. Also Toured Europe in 1996 and the USA in 1997. Won Australian Jazz Critics' Award in 1990 and 1992.
