Encyclopedia of Jazz Musicians
Inspired by his father Roberto Rodriguez, (b. 1959 in Guantanamo, Cuba), who is a drummer, Robert, his brother Michael(b. 1979) and younger sister Elaine (b.1983) began to pursue music from a very early age. Michael studied the trumpet and guitar while Robert pursued piano, percussion and the saxophone. Along with Mother Maria Rodriguez (b. Maria Delurdes Perez 1955 in Guayaquil Ecuador), the Rodriguez family moved to Miami in 1988 where Robert studied classical piano with William James, Rudy Brito and J.B.Floyd and Jazz piano with Michael Orta and Vince Maggio. Robert also studied piano and percussion at the performing arts high school New World School of The Arts and proceeded to achieve his bachelor's of music from the University of Miami. Through New world School of The Arts and the University of Miami, he was given the opportunity to perform with, Jerry Bergonzi, Jon Faddis, Kenny Weeler, and Maria Schneider. Robert has worke d professionally with Arturo Sandoval, Ira Sullivan, Ed Calle, Richard Bona, Ray Barretto and Giovani Hidalgo. In May of 2000 Robert performed and recorded in a live concert with Chick Corea, Steve Turre, Claudio Roditti, Arturo Sandoval, Dave Samuels, and many other jazz musicians on a CD and DVD entitled "Jam Miami". Robert also recorded on some of the incidental music to the HBO film "For Love or Country The Arturo Sandoval Story"(2000). Robert currently performs original music with The Rodriguez Brothers group, a collaboration with his brother Michael.
