Sicking, Altfrid

Sicking, Altfrid, vibraphone, marimba; b. Essen, Germany, 28 May 1960. His parents are Luzie and Bernhard Sicking (both born c. 1929). Altfrid is married and father of four kids.

From 1966-79, he went to school in Ahaus (Germany), graduating with his high school diploma in 1979. From 1979-85, he studied classical drums in Dortmund at the "Staatlichen Hochschule fur Musik Westfalen/Lippe." He had his examina in 1985. Since 1980, he taught drumset and mallets at the Musicschool Ahaus. Since 1985, he's been a percussion and drum teacher at the "Westfalischen Wilhelms-Universitat," Munster. Since 2000, he's been a workshop-author for the German magazine "Drums & Percussion" (improvisation the mallet-instruments). He's had composition studies with bei Prof. Derdack (Koln), jazz piano with Frank Wunsch, marimba with Keiko Abe and Dave Samuels and vibraphone with Stefan Bauer, Hendrik Meurkens, David Friedman and Gary Burton. As a drummer/percussionist, he's played theatremusic in Bochum, Munster, Gelsenkirchen and Oberhausen. He's played orchestral-music in Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Munster, Hagen, Bochum, Krefeld, Monchengladbach, Solingen, at the 'Westfalischen Sinfonie-Orchester' (WSO), the 'Philharmonia Hungarica', the 'Sudwestfalischen Philharmonie' and has played the musicals Les Miserables, Joseph, The Black Rider, and Evita. As a soloist, he played the world's first performance of 'Rituelle Aktion' (Walter Steffens). He's played contemorary chamber music in the 'Studio-Ensemble' and the 'Studio Neue Musik', in a duo with Prof. Dr. J. Dorfmuller. He's played radio and TV shows with chamber music and jazz. As a vibeplayer, he's played WDR-radio compositionsorder 'jazz and poetry.' He's been a sideman and vibraphon / marimba soloist in the 'WDR BigBand' Koln under direction of Bob Brookmeyer and Bill Dobbins. He's played in the piano-vibraphone duo with Christoph Spendel; Jazz-Hip-Hop with 'Exponential Enjoyment' , Drums'n'Bass with the 'Dirk Brand-Connection' and 'Visions Of Roots.' He's played TV and movie music with the 'Altfrid Sicking Trio' (Jazz, free music) and as a soloist (New Age). He's played with Peter Erskine, Danny Gottlieb, Jorg-Achim Keller, Gerd Dudek, Rainer Bruninghaus, Romy Cameron, Eddie Daniels, Nguyen Le, Charlie Mariano, Lee Konitz and others.
