Turner, Kevin (Phillip)
My father, Hubert Turner, is responsible for my guidance and direction in my training. He found the best teachers and mentors for my course of study in jazz music.
Studied guitar with guitarist Dave Workman, and improvisation with Bobby Alston (jazz trumpeter; a graduate of Berklee School of Music in the 60's) and Cornell Wiley (jazz bassist). I attended Fort Hayes Performing Arts High School in Columbus, Ohio where Hank Marr was my teacher. I joined his band in the winter of 1977 (my junior year). My first gig with Hank included Rusty Bryant.
Received scholarship to attend Ohio State University. I graduated with a bachelor degree in jazz studies / performance. Won outstanding guitarist at Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Fest several times as well as the Tri C Jazz Festivals in Cleveland during my course of study at OSU. I graduated with Masters in Music Education from the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign.
I performed in many professional groups in Columbus including, The Columbus Symphony Pops (Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Allen etc.), Gene Walker Group (guitar), Hank Marr (guitar), Vince Andrews (bass and guitar), Bobby Floyd (bass and guitar), Arnette Howard (guitar), Kim Pensyl and many others. I've performed on gigs for the following nationally known artists: Jimmy Smith (1980), Eric Gale (while he lived in Columbus briefly), Ray Charles (1984), George Howard (1985), Jeane Carne (1985), Hank Crawford (w/ Hank Marr), George Coleman (w/ Hank Marr), Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, Melvin Rhyne, Ron Bridgewater and many others.
