van der Lee, Loet
van der Lee, Loet, trumpet, flugelhorn, composer, teacher and producer; b. Bakkum (N-H), Netherlands, b. 3 June 1968. He was raised in Schoorl (N-H) Netherlands. His mother is Wil Jager and his father is Henk van der Lee.
Loet started to play the trumpet at the age of 10 and studied jazz later on with Ack van Rooyen, Ruud Breuls, Bert Joris, studied classical music with Wim van Vliet and jazz theory with Rob Madna at the Hilversum conservatory from 1987 until 1993. His study included workshops with Michael Brecker, Bobby Shew, Arthuro Sandoval, Tom Harrel, Kenny Wheeler, Jerry van Rooyen, Harold Land, Bob Mintzer, Peter Herbolzheimer, and Allan Vizutti. In 1999 the Dutch 'Fonds voor de Podiumkunsten' and the 'Fonds for young musicians of the Prins Bernardfonds' awarded Loet with a scholarship to go and study jazz trumpet in United States of Amerika. He studied in New York with Brian Lynch and got incidental lessons from Joe Magnarelly, Wynton Marsalis and Jim Rotondi. In Los Angeles he studied with Bobby Shew and Malcolm McNab and got incidental lessons from Gary Grant and Clay Jenkins.
Loet soon became interested in many different music styles such as jazz, salsa, pop, big-band, small band, blues, funk and studio music and made himself soon familiar with these styles. He played with, amongest others; John Engels, Roy Hardgrove, Michiel Borstlap, Martin Wind, Rob van Bavel, Martijn Vink, John Marshall, Perico Sambeat, Lee Konitz, David Schnitter, Dick de Graaf, Greetje Kaufeld, Jesse van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Henk Meutgeert, Richard Ross, Ferdinant Povel, Dale Barlow, Denise Jannah, Marjorie Barnes, Hans Dulfer, Bart van Lier, Ilja Reingoud, Jeroen Zijlstra, Michael Moore, Stefan Kruger, Bert Boeren, Anton Goudsmit, Het Rosenberg Trio, Gerardo Rosales Lucas van Merwijk and many more.
His work included tours and performances with: the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, the New Cool Collective Big Band (North Sea Jazz festival 1999), the Gerardo Rosales Latin Jazz Ensemble (North Sea Jazz Festival 1998), the Cubop City Big Band, La Banda, Loet van der Lee Quartet (North Sea Jazzfestival 2003), Berend van den Berg's Octet, Rumbata, the Say No More Brassband (North Sea Jazz Festival 1997). Gerardo Rosales y su Sonora and the Hilversum Conservatory Big Band (the International Conference of Jazz Educators, Miami Florida). Also with the Peter Ypma + Eleven band, Venezuela Sonora, The Amsterdam Jazz Quintet, Milenium Jazzorguestra, the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Jeff Jeralamon Bebop Express (Spain). Moreover he worked in several musicals such as; Annie the Musical, Grease, the European and Holland tour of Hair and Ain't Misbehavin'.
He's worked as a conductor for the AMC Bigband (Academic Medical Centre of Amsterdam), Holland Bigband and For Fellows Bigband.
He's married to Rifka Verhoef (born 14 May 1969) now Rifka van der Lee. They have 1 daughter born on 14 November 2001.
