In 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded & released "Time Out," one of the best-loved and top-selling jazz albums of all-time. Five years before that landmark album, American pianist Dave Brubeck had already been on the cover of Time magazine. The recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, Brubeck was also presented with the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. As this award s very first individual recipient, the State Department wrote that ''as a pianist, composer, cultural emissary and educator, Dave Brubeck's life's work exemplifies the best of America's cultural diplomacy."
